Michael is a GP and Medical Director of The Smart Clinics in London, with clinics in Brompton Cross (South Kensington) and Wandsworth Common (Bellevue Village).

He qualified as a doctor at London’s St Bartholomew’s Hospital. After initially specialising in eye surgery, he decided he was far more interested in treating the whole person, not just their eyes. So he became a GP and eventually became senior partner in a large family practice.

One day he realised that his weight had crept up and he was a stone (6.5 kg) overweight. He tried to lose weight by following various diets, but nothing seemed to work. Eventually he worked out an approach that did work. Penguin published it as How to Lose Weight Without Really Dieting.

Since then Dr Spira has written other diet books and been on several national TV programmes as a diet expert. He has also been adviser to the UK government on an obesity programme, and a member of the Association of the Study of Obesity and the National Obesity Forum. He has been a medical consultant at Bupa Wellness where advice on diet and lifestyle are key issues.

Besides his many books and articles, he is regularly featured as a guest on national TV and radio including as medical expert on BBC1’s Kilroy, ITV’s GMTV and ITV’s The Gloria Hunniford Show, which you can watch on YouTube video below.

He was also principal guest on the late Diana Dor’s show on BBC Radio 2. His interest in slimming has always encompassed new and scientifically tested approaches, of which the latest is the use of diet and HIIT (high intensity interval training) as a means of weight loss – the subject of his latest book, The 12 Minute Weight Loss Guide.
